What are my options?
There are many contact lens options available. Your eye care provider will take your lifestyle and vision correction needs into consideration when helping you select the right lenses for your eyes.
Here are some of the most common contact lens types:
- Soft contact lenses – Soft lenses are comfortable to wear and must be replaced monthly, weekly or daily depending on the type you choose. Soft lenses are often recommended for sports because they fit closer to the eye and are more difficult to dislodge. They can provide correction for most prescriptions including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Your doctor will discuss the best option for you based upon not only your prescription, but your eye health.
- Hard contact lenses – Hard contact lenses are sometimes also referred to as gas-permeable (GP) lenses. This means that they are porous enough to allow oxygen to enter through to the cornea despite their rigidity. Hard contact lenses can often provide the greatest quality vision, but require a longer adaptation period and consistent wear to maintain adaptation.
- Multifocal lenses In both soft and GP designs, multifocal lenses offer patients both distance and near vision correction just like a pair of progressive eyeglasses.
- Colored contact lenses – These can be worn to enhance or completely change the color of one’s eyes. These contact lenses can still contain prescription and come in a variety of colors.
- Medically necessary contact lenses – For some individuals with specific conditions such as keratoconus, history of refractive surgery such as RK and/or corneal scarring, contact lenses can be medically necessary to aid in improving one’s vision. Our eye doctor is highly skilled and trained in the fitting of scleral contact lenses.
